چکیده

The Adverse Event Ontology (AEO) is a realism-based biomedical ontology for adverse events. Currently AEO has 484 representational units annotated by means of terms including 369 AEO-specific terms and 115 terms from existing feeder-ontologies. In AEO, the term „adverse event‟ is used exclusively to denote pathological bodily processes that are induced by a medical intervention. This requirement for a causal association between an adverse event and a medical intervention clearly distinguishes our approach from other approaches according to which any untoward phenomenon observed to have appeared in a mere temporal relation with some medical intervention becomes reported as an „adverse event‟. We label such phenomena as being the subject of „adverse event hypotheses‟.

OAE: The Ontology of Adverse Events

BACKGROUND A medical intervention is a medical procedure or application intended to relieve or prevent illness or injury. Examples of medical interventions include vaccination and drug administration. After a medical intervention, adverse events (AEs) may occur which lie outside the intended consequences of the intervention. The representation and analysis of AEs are critical to the improvement...

An evolutionary approach to realism-based adverse event representations.

BACKGROUND Part of the ReMINE project involved the creation of an ontology enabling computer-assisted decision support for optimal adverse event management. OBJECTIVES The ontology was required to satisfy the following requirements: 1) to be able to account for the distinct and context-dependent ways in which authoritative sources define the term 'adverse event', 2) to allow the identificatio...

Introducing Realist Ontology for the Representation of Adverse Events

The goal of the REMINE project is to build a high performance prediction, detection and monitoring platform for managing Risks against Patient Safety (RAPS). Part of the work involves developing an ontology enabling computer-assisted RAPS decision support on the basis of the disease history of a patient as documented in a hospital information system. A requirement of the ontology is to contain ...

A 2012 Workshop: Vaccine and Drug Ontology in the Study of Mechanism and Effect (VDOSME 2012)

Vaccines and drugs have contributed to dramatic improvements in public health worldwide. Over the last decade, there have been efforts in developing biomedical ontologies that represent various areas associated with vaccines and drugs. These ontologies combined with existing health and clinical terminology systems (e.g., SNOMED, RxNorm, NDF-RT, MedDRA, VO, OAE, and AERO) could play significant ...

Ontology-based time information representation of vaccine adverse events in VAERS for temporal analysis

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND The U.S. FDA/CDC Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) provides a valuable data source for post-vaccination adverse event analyses. The structured data in the system has been widely used, but the information in the write-up narratives is rarely included in these kinds of analyses. In fact, the unstructured nature of the narratives makes the data embedded in the...
